My name is Barbara Shafer and I am the Chef and Owner of A Chef of Your Own LLC.
Food has always been my passion and I have been involved with it for the last 30 years in some shape or form. After graduating Penn State with a degree in Nutrition, I realized that my options were either working in a hospital or doing research. Neither one of those appealed to me so I went on to culinary school and graduated from The Walnut Hill School in Philadelphia, Pa. Through the years, I have worked for independent restauranteurs, large corporations, a private children’s school, a sorority at Colorado State University, private assisted living for the elderly and owned my own catering company.
In 1998 after feeling bored with my career, I saw a news piece on CNN about personal chefs. This looked so cool to me! I could do the kind of food I liked, be my own boss and provide a great service to people. A Chef of Your Own was started two weeks later.
Over the year’s people have asked me to prepare more health specific entrees and menus. From diabetic meals, heart healthy, dialysis sensitive to the South Beach Diet to name a few. It occurred to me that food allergies and sensitivities have been on the rise and they weren’t going away. Why not specialize in food allergies and help educate people? I have had the pleasure of teaching Food Allergies and Food Sensitivity certification classes to chefs and food service personal around the country through a local Fort Collins company. The rest is history.
Today, A Chef of Your Own employs Stephanie Javernick as Sous Chef and continues to expand its menu and deliver meals throughout Northern Colorado to private clients. We pride ourselves on fresh, seasonal entrees and sides. It’s our passion!
